Elementary Students Improve Reading Published: May 16, 2008
While most District 709 elementary students are relaxing by 3:00 p.m., one group of students has just been starting an afternoon of learning.
Beginning in mid-January and continuing through April, more than 60 third through sixth grade students participated in an after school program designed to strengthen their reading skills. Students from Lettie Brown, Grundy and Lincoln schools bussed to Jefferson School after completing their regular school day. Meeting twice a week – Monday/Wednesday for the fifth and sixth grade group and Tuesday/Thursday for the third and fourth grade group – students worked until 4 p.m. with the help of reading tutors.
Students who successfully met reading, attendance and behavior goals in the program were rewarded with their choice of a WebKinz pet, pool passes or a gift card.
See photos of the reading students. Read more. |
